Summary

The remains of a Roman building have been found on the site of the former gasworks on Icen Way, Dorchester. The only evidence for this building is a fragment of a tessellated floor and some tegulae found in 1902. Very little detail on this find survives. The design of the tessellated floor included a guilloche pattern. Further fragments of Roman buildings have been found in the vicinity, but it is unclear whether they form part of the same building or separate structures.

Full Description

The remains of a Roman building have been found on the site of the former gasworks on Icen Way, Dorchester (1). The only evidence for this building is a fragment of a tessellated floor and some tegulae found in 1902 (2) (3). Very little detail on this find survives. The design of the tessellated floor included a guilloche pattern (4). A few red, white and grey tesserae remain in the Dorset County Museum (1).

Further fragments of Roman buildings have been found in the vicinity, but it is unclear whether they form part of the same building or separate structures (1).
