Summary

Medieval hospital founded around 1267 and annexed to the Franciscan Friary in 1483. In 1485 it was described as a free chapel. The remains of the chapel were pulled down in 1751.

Full Description

(Area SY 69039089). A little North of Colliton House in Colliton Row stood a religious foundation called the Rectory or Hospital of St John Baptist, St John's House or Dorchester Hospital. This hospital was a Royal foundation and 3 Edw VI was called the late free chapel of St John. All the remains of this chapel were pulled down in 1751 and converted into a brewhouse. <1>

Commonly called St John's House, the hospital of St John the Baptist was under royal patronage and probably of royal foundation but the date of foundation is not known. First mentioned in 1324. <2>

St John the Baptist and St Anthony hospital at Dorchester founded before 1267 and dessolved 1485; 1547. For the poor, aged and sick. For a warden, bretheren and sisters. It was reckoned as a free chapel in 1485. <3>

Two lesser hospitals or hospices. Net income under #50. <4>

(SY 69069091) Colliton Row extends from (SY 69069087) to (SY 69079095) and is shown as a built up area fronting the West side of Glyde Path Hill. The area is derelict and not built upon, though traces of buildings remain. No trace of dateable antiquity was found. The brewhouse mentioned in authy. 1 could not be located. <5>
