Monument record MDO18988 - Roman burial, 17 Casterbridge Road, Dorchester

An unaccompanied inhumation burial was found immediately north of 17 Casterbridge Road in 1958. This burial is thought most likely to be Roman in date.

A probable Romano-British burial was discovered in 1958 when workmen were digging drains immediately north of 17 Casterbridge Road. The drain trench had cut through the skeleton leaving part of the lower limbs in the north side of the trench and the skull in the south. The skeleton appeared to be extended and supine, oriented approximately E-W with head to the west. No grave goods were recovered. Although no dating evidence was recovered, this burial is thought to be Roman, on the basis of other burials found in the vicinity. (1-2)
