Full Description

An excavation was carried out to the rear of South Grove Cottage in 1972 (at SY69159036). The earliest phase was represented by a pit and three related spreads of pottery occupation debris dating to approximately 75-150 CE. On the east side of the trench at the north end there were robbed fundations of a building of late C3 or C4 date. A small feature cut into the natural soil within the foundations contained fragments of bone, probably the remains of an infant burial. Four pits were of c4 date. Two phases of cobbling at the rear of the rampart are probably late Roman, as well as several unsealed small features such as an irregular gully, pits and postholes. Modern terraces and pits were also found. <1-2>
