Full Description

Two intercutting graves were recorded during the construction of garages for Grove Court Flats, to the south of the New Compasses Inn in February 1975. The graves were cut into the chalk and oriented ENE-WSW. The northern grave cut the southern one and both were damaged by the construction of the garages. The southern grave contained an extended inhumation burial with the head to the west. Coffin nails were found on either side of the skull suggesting the burial was originally in a wooden coffin. The details of the northern grave not known.
