The northern edge of the inner ditch of the Roman town defences of Dorchester was recorded in a gas-main trench at the south end of South Street in 1979. (1)

At the end of the street the line of the south defences was crossed but no trace of either bank or wall survived. The northern lip of the inner ditch was observed at SY 69209035), beyond which was dark soil and rubble filling the upper part of the ditch.
