Full Description
During the excavation of a gas main from the northern side of High West Street across Top o'Town to the northern side of Bridport Road, some detail of the nature of the town defences was observed by R. A. H. Farrar. Across the line of The Grove the upper part of two ditches were seen with a ridge of natural chalk between. Where the gas main trench crossed the line of the town rampart and wall, the trench was not sufficiently deep to expose any undisturbed stratigraphy. No trace of the West Gate was found.
