‘MEDEIVAL DECTORATED TILES FROM OWERMOIGNE, PORTESHAM AND STRATTON. Medieval tiles from secular contexts are rare. We are grateful, therefore, for the report by Mrs Ruth Whitty of the discovery of a fragment of tile found during potato-picking opposite the drive of Moigne Court, Owermoigne (c. SY 765856). Enough of the inlaid design remains for it to be identified as part of the arms of Queen Eleanor of Castile (A. B. Emden, Medieval Decorated Tiles in Dorset (1977), no. 145). Other examples are known from Sherborne Abbey, Glanville’s Wootton and the tile-kiln site at Hermitage. The tile is late 12th/early 13th century in date. Mr. W. G. Putnam also reports the find by Mr C. Jeans in the garden of 3 Manor Close, Stratton, of the corner of an inlaid tile. The design appears to be similar to Emden No. 2. Mrs G. P. Kilroy has donated to the County Museum an almost complete tile decorated with Emden No. 192, previously recorded only at Glanville’s Wootton (early 16th century). It has no keys on the back, only a shallow inlay and a slight edge bevel: found outside Goodridge Cottage, Church Lane, Portesham, it may derive from the church.’
