Full Description

The archaeological field evaluation to the rear of the Alington Dairy, 33 Glyde Path Road, Dorchester was carried out by AC archaeology during late April 1998, in advance of a proposed residential development. Two trenches were excavated, both revealing evidence for archaeological activity of the Romano-British period, sealed by a deep post-medieval soil deposit.

Trench 1 (located against the northern boundary of the site) was oriented E-W and measured 2m x 1m in plan. A probable chalk floor was identified above a Roman opus signinum surface lying at a depth of c.1.5m below ground level. These features probably represent elements of a domestic building of late-2nd to 3rd century AD date.
