Full Description

Remains of a possible deserted settlement/village? consisting of small ditched and banked enclosures and a possible hollow-way are visible infield SY 782849 east of Galton village. Not mentioned by RCHM. <1-2>

Centred SY 78258495: this site has been reduced to vague, unsurveyable scarps and undulations which form no coherent pattern. The field, at present under pasture, has been much ploughed. Area outlined on 1:10560 record sheet. <3>

The probable medieval deserted settlement earthworks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs <1> of the 1940s to the north of Wareham Road, east of Galton. The earthworks consist of building platforms with hollow ways running between them. A number of trackways or drains are also located around the platforms. The earthworks are visible over an area measuring approximately 170 m by 150 m. Three probable field boundaries are located immediately to the west of the settlement earthworks and may be associated with them. The boundaries are formed of linear banks, oriented north-south and measuring up to 165 m in length. These features were digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.
