Monument record MDO18745 - Olds Garage, 55 Bridport Road, Dorchester; Roman Grave 209

A number of Roman graves were discovered during the archaeological evaluation of the site of the former Olds Garage, 55 Bridport Road, Dorchester by Context One Archaeological Services in 2006. Grave 209 was sub-rectangular and aligned approximately W-E, on the same line as grave 206 immediately to the east. It contained the partially articulated remains of an extended supine juvenile inhumation with the head to the west. No dating evidence was recovered, but it is likely that this is a Late Roman burial.

Grave 209 was sub-rectangular and aligned approximately W-E. It was on the same line and about 0.45m west of grave 206. It measured 1.22m long and up to 0.5m wide. It contained the partially articulated remains of a human juvenile, exposed only to establish the level of articulation. The inhumation was lying in a supine and extended position, with the upper torso of the body at the western end of the grave. The skull had been fragmented in antiquity and little remained in situ. In addition, the hands and feet had been substantially disturbed in antiquity. No dating evidence was recovered, but it is likely that this is a Late Roman burial.
