Monument record MDO18663 - Library Site, Colliton Park, Dorchester; Roman Oven 5

Please read our .

Summary

Oven 5 was one of eight ovens found during the excavations on the site of the new Dorset County Library, Colliton Park, Dorchester in 1961-63. Oven 5 lay within the area of Building 5 but was sealed beneath spreads of material associated with this building. The firing floor was cut by the south wall of Building 3. It was constructed from limestone and hamstone in a chalky mortar and was cut into the natural chalk. The firing floor lay to the north. Three postholes were found around this oven, possibly suggesting it was roofed. No dating evidence was recovered but it must be earlier than the construction of Building 3 probably in the 3rd century.
