Monument record MDO18625 - Applegates, 34 Trinity Street, Dorchester; Post-medieval activity

Please read our .

Summary

A number of post-medieval pits, postholes and chalk surfaces were found during excavations on the site of Applegates, 34 Trinity Street, Dorchester in 1971. In the central and southern part of the site were eight pits containing material dating from the late 17th to the mid 19th century. One of the pits was stone-lined and another was brick-lined. These pits were probably all used for cess and rubbish disposal and were probably associated with the houses fronting on to Trinity Street. Two wells, were also found. On the eastern side of the site, a number of postholes of probably broadly similar date to the pits were found, together with some rough chalk surfaces, but no coherent structures can be deduced from them, nor the precise nature of the activity they represent.
