Summary

Earthworks of the medieval village of Galton, arranged around a crossroads. A map of 1774 shows the settlement as abandoned. Field boundaries which may be associated with the settlement are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s.

Full Description

Field boundaries which may be associated with the deserted settlement described in <1> are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s. The boundaries are formed of three linear banks measuring up to 70 m in length. <2> These features were digitally plotted as part of the Wild Purbeck Mapping Project.

SY 777851. Settlement remains, formerly part of Galton, lie to the south of Galton Farm and consist of many enclosures abandoned since 1774 (a). The settlement was situated around crossroads; the road running East-West at circa SY 778852 is disused and survives as a hollow-way. <1> <2>

Earthworks indicative of former settlement, centred at SY 7775 8503, cover an area of approximately 0.65 ha. They consist of three possible building platforms and associated enclosure banks up to 0.4 m high, covering 0.35 ha on the north side of a small field-way, and several unsurveyable minor scarps and undulations.

Centred at SY 77678510, east of the farm-house, is a large rectangular platform bounded by scarps.

Centred at SY 77658500 are four parallel stepped rectangular fields about 75.0 m in length east-west by 18.0 m wide and bounded on the north side by lynchet banks up to 0.8 m high. An 0.6 m high angled scarp at SY 77748515 is the remaining part of an old enclosure.

'(17) SETTLEMENT REMAINS (777851), formerly part of Galton, lie to the S. of Galton Farm. There are many enclosures, abandoned since 1774 (see J. Upjohn, Map of the Manor of Ower-Moign (1774), in D.C. R.O.). The settlement was around cross roads; the road running E. to W. about 778852 is disused and survives as a hollow-way (R.A.F. V.A.P. CPE/UK 1821: 6429). '
