Full Description
Found in Trench 4 during excavation at Middle Farm undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1992 (1) (2). Round house 1176 comprised a post ring of seven pairs of postholes forming an approximate circle 7m in diameter. This post ring was defined from an area containing a large number of postholes, both within and outside the structure, possibly indicating alterations or the presence of further structures. No indication of a porch or of an entrance was found. No floor levels survived. No dating evidence was recovered but it is likely that the structure is of Late Bronze Age date.
This round house was found in a sondage through the colluvial deposits which covered most of the southern part of the trench. Further associated structures may have been present beneath the colluvium.
