Full Description
Found in the southwestern part of Trench 2 during excavation at Middle Farm undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in 1992 (1) (2). Round house 1622 comprised a post ring of six posts forming an approximate circle 5m in diameter. There were an additional few small postholes on the arc and in the interior of the post ring. No indication of a porch or of an entrance was found. No floor levels survived. A shallow irregular feature in the north part of the house produced charcoal, burnt flint and limestone. No dating evidence was recovered but it is likely that the structure is of Late Bronze Age date.
This round house was one of a pair, with round house 1613 immediately to the north. A number of Late Bronze Age pits were found in the immediate vicinity. This round house may be part of a larger settlement complex, further elements of which were found on the Coburg Road site in 1988, immediately to the southeast.
