Full Description
Found during the excavations directed by Christopher Sparey Green, for the Dorchester Excavation Committee, between 1966 and 1979 during development of the Grove Trading Estate on the eastern slopes of Poundbury Camp, Dorchester (1). The numbers in square brackets below refer to the context and feature numbers used in the published report and archive (1) (2).
The Late Iron Age structure IA1, was found beneath the Roman building R17, on site D about 50m southeast of the main Late Iron Age unenclosed settlement on the hill slopes to the east of Poundbury Camp. It comprised the badly preserved remains of a round house terraced into the slope. A small part of a curving gully, with traces of two post sockets in the base was found, which suggests a structure of about 6.8m in diameter. A number of other post holes and stake holes were found in the area, but it is unclear whether they were associated with this house or one of the later buildings on the site. No occupation debris was found and this house is poorly dated.
