Monument record MDO18361 - South Walks Tunnel Sewer; Roman building and yards

Please read our .

Summary

Part of the footings of a building and a series of yard surfaces were exposed during the digging of a sewer along the southern part of Charles Street in 1990 and recorded by Wessex Archaeology. A series of discontinuous thin crushed chalk spreads and lenses of ash and charcoal were found and have been interpreted as probable yard surfaces. Roman pottery found associated with these surfaces included an amphora sherd and late 1st century coarsewares. Associated with these yard surfaces was a probable footing trench for a building 3.4m wide. Some stone rubble was found but no in situ stonework. The building appears to have been oriented parallel with the NE-SW road to the south. Immediately south of the possible building footing was a gravel path.
