Full Description
Part of a Roman opus signinum floor was found during underpinning and lowering of the floor level within a workshop attached to 7 Greenings Court, Dorchester in 1993. An area of opus signinum floor about 2m by 1m across was exposed in the NE corner of the building. No associated walls were found. The floor comprised a 0.15m thick layer of opus signinum on a 0.1m thick base of flint and chalk rubble, constructed over a layer of chalk and soil. The top of the floor was at 58.47m above OD. A small area of reddish-brown clay with chalk and oyster shell was found overlying part of the floor. Elsewhere, the floor had been cut away by later activity. This floor was undoubtedly part of a Roman building, which lay on the northern side of the Roman street which was exposed to the south during excavations in 1970. It is difficult to relate the floor to the evidence found in the 1970 excavations.
