Full Description
A small stakehole structure was investigated by excavation in 2005 by Wessex Archaeology, in advance of development as part of Phase II of the Poundbury development (1). The numbers in square brackets are context numbers used in the report (1).
Structure [206] comprised five stakeholes, perhaps forming a small structure about 3m long and 1.5m wide. It is possible that there are further stakeholes to the north, beyond the excavated area. No datable finds were recovered, but one of the stakeholes [50] contained a large amount of charred grain, in particular hulled barley, which is common in Middle Bronze Age contexts, perhaps indicating a date for this structure. It lay about 30m west of the Middle Bronze Age enclosure [F204] and lay towards the northeast end of a N-S coombe. The stakeholes were apparently sealed beneath the colluvium in this coombe.
