Full Description
A large probably roughly circular feature was visible as a shallow depression about 0.5m deep and about 20m in diameter. It was partially excavated in the west end of evaluation trench 2 excavated by Wessex Archaeology in 2000, in the area to the west of Poundbury Farm. A partial slot was excavated through it to a depth of 1.2m. It contained modern domestic rubbish dating to the 1930s and was sealed by layers of crushed tarmac, chalk and soil.
This large pit is likely to have been a post-medieval chalk pit, backfilled with modern rubbish.
