Monument record MDO18274 - Wessex Court, Charles Street, Dorchester; Post-medieval activity, Trench 6

A small amount of evidence for stone robbing of the Roman buildings in the post-medieval period was found in Trench 6, during the 1990 excavations at Wessex Court, Charles Street, Dorchester, together with a small number of other shallow truncated pits dating to the 17th century or later.

Found during the excavations carried out by Wessex Archaeology in 1990 in the proposed Wessex Court retail development area between Charles Street, Acland Road, and South Walks, Dorchester (1) (2) (3). The numbers in square brackets below are context and feature numbers used in the report and archive (1) (3).

Four robber trenches and a pit in the area of the late Roman building, Structure 4, probably date to the post-medieval period on stratigraphic grounds and contained a small quantity of post-medieval finds. Two pits, not obviously associated with robbing activity, and containing 17th century pottery were also found. Both were shallow truncated features of uncertain function.
