Monument record MDO18184 - Maiden Castle First School (Prince of Wales First School): Late Iron Age Round house 514

The remains of a Late Iron Age roundhouse were exposed in the southwestern part of the Late Iron Age Enclosure 1 during excavations at Maiden Castle First School in 1993 undertaken by AC archaeology.

The 1993 excavations undertaken by AC archaeology on the Maiden Castle First School site (now the Prince of Wales First School), revealed the remains of a probable roundhouse located close to the back of the bank in the SW angle of enclosure 1.

This roundhouse was defined by lengths of curving gully, suggesting that it had been rebuilt at least once. It was about 8m in diameter. It did not appear to have been terraced into the slope. An oval hollow lay with in the curve of the southern side of this house, but it is not certain it was contemporary. This house was not excavated.

This roundhouse may have been part of the original internal layout of the enclosed settlement with house 512. It appears to have been demolished and replaced by structure 518.
