Monument record MDO18170 - New Gas Main, High East Street: Roman building 106/130

The remains ofa possible beam slot for a Roman timber building were found during a watching brief on a new gas main in High East Street, Dorchester in 2005 by Terrain Archaeology. No dating evidence was recovered.

Found during the watching brief on the new gas main in High East Street, Dorchester undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in 2005.

The remains of a vertically-sided flat-bottomed slot about 0.35m wide and 0.35m deep was observed in the north and south sections of the gas pipe trench [features 130 &106]. It was filled with reddish-brown clay soil with chalk. No finds were recovered.

This slot was oriented roughly NNE-SSW and may represent a beam slot for a Roman timber building. No associated floor surfaces were found. If this was part of a building, then it is likely to continue to the west beyond the edge of the gas pipe trench.
