Full Description

Found during the watching brief on the new gas main in High East Street, Dorchester undertaken by Terrain Archaeology in 2005.

This feature [125] was only observed in section, where it was cut by the gas pipe trench. It lay near the eastern limit of the observed area. This posthole was about 0.75m deep with steeply sloping/vertical sides and a 0.25m diameter postpipe. It was filled with reddish-brown clay with a concentration of charcoal flecks within the area of the postpipe. No finds were recovered. The relationship of this feature with the prehistoric (pre-urban) soil is unclear as the soils are very similar. The character of the fill suggests this may be a prehistoric feature.
