Full Description
Found during the evaluation of a proposed new site for Damers First School to the west of Poundbury Cemetery, undertaken by AC archaeology in 2005. (1)
Part of a single ditch aligned approximately E-W was exposed running across Trench 9 [Feature F905] for a distance of 1.7m. It was 1.2m wide and 0.55m deep with steeply sloping sides and slightly rounded base. It was filled with a single dark brown soil fill which produced a small quantity of worked flint.
The line of this ditch was picked up during a geophysical survey undertaken in advance of the evaluation (2).
No secure dating evidence was recovered, but it is likely that this ditch formed part of the extensive Bronze Age ditched field system previously found during fieldwork in the areas adjacent to the site and visible on aerial photographs.
