Full Description

(SY 44839969) Mansion House (NR) (Site of) (1)

North Bowood seems to be the Bovewood of Domesday, which then belonged to the Bp of Salisbury. It was formerly a manor; in 1316 Wm de Vernay was returned as Lord of Bouewood.

From the reign of Rich II until that of Queen Mary the property was that of the Hussey family, from whom it came to a branch of the Gollops of Strode.

In 1663 it was held by Mr John Strode who lived in the mansion house here. (For site of chapel and possible medieval desertion, see SY 49 NW 6). (2)

According to the occupier of the present North Bowood House (a modern buildig), an old well was once found in the garden which now occupies the published site, and building stone continues
to be turned up.

No traces were found during field investigation. (3)
