Summary

A Norman style private chapel and chapel of ease at Creech Grange built in 1746 by Denis Bond who intended it to be a landscape feature within the park. It incorporates a 12th century chancel arch which is thought to be from either East Holme Priory or Bindon Abbey. The chapel was rebuilt in 1849-68 for Nathaniel Bond. It is constructed of ashlar with stone slate roofs.

Full Description

The chapel of Saint John the Evangelist at Creech Grange has walls faced with local ashlar and roofs of stone slate and modern asbestos. It was built in 1746 by Denis Bonds of Creech Grange, and originally consisted of a nave with a small sanctuary entered through a mid 12th century archway (a notable Romanesque feature) brought from the priory church at East Holme, and a west tower.

In the 19th century the nave and tower were rebuilt, and the north transet chancel and vestry were added. <2>

St John's Church is locked and is not in use at present pending repairs, although it appears externally to be structurally sound. Published 1:2500 survey correct. <4>
