Summary

Plan of 12th century chancel arch, the nave and West tower were built in the 15th century. The chancel was built in the 13th century and altered in the 15th century. The North aisle is modern and the South porch is 17th century. It is possible that Winfrith Newburgh church was a minster in the late Saxon period.

Full Description

Parish Church of St Christopher, Winfrith Newburgh has walls of limestone rubble, flint and carstone with the earliest parts dating from the 12th century, including the west wall of the chancel and the south door of the nave. The remainder of the chancel dates from the early 13th century except the east wall which was rebuilt in the 19th century. The south wall of the nave was entirely rebuilt during the 15th century but incorporates re-used 12th century material. The west tower is of the early 15th century and the south porch an addition of the 17th century. The north aisle was added in 1854 when the church was restored. <2>
