Full Description

Charborough House, standing in some 300 acres of parkland, is a large, ashlar, stucco and brick-faced building of two storeys with cellars and attics. A house was built here by Sir Walter Erle in the first half of the 17th century but this was burnt down during the Civil War. The very fragmentary remains of this earlier house were incorporated into a new house which was built during the Commonwealth (1649-1660) This building comprised a tall, single block of two storeys with basements and attics which reused some of the material from the then destroyed Corfe Castle. Between the early 18th century until the later 19th century the house was remodelled and altered with large extensions to the south west and south east (see plans). <2-3>
