Summary

A public house thought to have been built in the eighteenth century, and enlarged in the nineteenth century. The building has colourwashed walls of stone rubble and a stone slate roof with stone chimney stacks. There is a main range of one storey and attic.

‘The following monuments unless otherwise described are of two storeys, or in a few instances of one storey with attics, and have walls of local Purbeck stone rubble and stone-slated roofs; they are of the late 18th or early 19th century. … (8) Square and Compass p.h. (230 yds. N.E.) was enlarged in the 19th century.’
