Full Description
<1> Papworth, M, 1992, Brownsea Island, Dorset. Wessex region, 12 (Unpublished document). SWX1390.
Much of the original 1547 Henry VIII coastal fort remains but this has been obscured by the 18th and 19th century additions which surround it. It was used as a fort during the 17th century but was converted to a residence in 1718. From a detailed view and plan of the castle (RCHM, 1970 plate 158) it is evident that the castle originally consisted of a square single-storey stone building surrounded on three sides by a moat and with a hexagonal gun platform on the fourth, seaward, and enclosed by a low wall. The entrance was in the south-west side approached across the moat over a drawbridge. In the view three guns are shown on the roof of the main structure, but the platform is empty of guns. On plan the main structure is divided into three rooms. Visited 25/2/1992
