Full Description

Papworth M, 1994, Eastington, Acton, Westwood, Wilkswood, New Barn, Corfe Castle Estate, Wessex Region, 36 (Unpublished document). SWX1388.

This building has been the subject of a vernacular building report which describes it in detail. It is mentioned here for its archaeological significance. Westwood is the site of an ancient farm mentioned as early as the 14th century. A building is shown here on Treswell’s map of 1586 and two buildings are shown here on Woodward’s map of 1775. The present stone farmhouse is thought to be largely 17th century but probably has earlier elements within it. There are smoke blackened timbers in the roof which suggests that there was once an open hall house here. A large 17th century fireplace was uncovered in the parlour in 1992.
