Full Description

<1> Chandler, J, and Cox, P, 1997, Proposed New Swimming Pool at Melbury Sampford House, Melbury Sampford, Dorset. Archaeological and Historical Assessment (Unpublished document). SDO12361.

'7.2 The potential presence of the medieval settlement. No positive evidence can be provided at this level of survey for the presence of the medieval settlement. The natural topography of the site, with a steep-sided valley immediately east of the church, makes it unlikely that the settlement lay in this area. A position south or west of the church is the most likely site, although if the present house lies on the site of the former medieval manor house then the settlement may not have been closely associated with the church and may have been even further west or south than an initial inspection suggests. The substantial landscaping works which have been undertaken on the site in the last 400 years have seemingly masked, or removed, any evidence for the settlement.'
