Full Description

The building is E-shaped in plan and is part one storey and attic and part two-storeys. There is a two-storeyed gabled porch in the centre of the front range, with moulded round-arched outer doorway and 4-centred arched inner doorway. On the first floor is a 2-light stone mullioned window with lead lights and hoodmould. On each side of the porch there is a similar window on each floor, those on upper floor in gabled dormers. Projecting wings at each end have, in the gable end, a 2-light stone mullioned window with lead lights on the ground floor and a similar window with hoodmould on first floor. Inner face of left wing has, on the ground floor, one 2-light and one 4-light similar window whilst the inner face of the right wing has, on the ground floor, a similar 4-light window and a 4-centred arched doorway. Attached outbuildings on the north, and at the rear, are of rubble stone, with stone slate roofs and are probably 19th century in date. Internally, the main ground floor room in the right wing has oak panelling with classical pilasters and enriched cornice, and a stone fireplace with a 4-centred arch. The hall has a similar fireplace, and a cut string stair with moulded balusters and carved spandrel brackets.

Morton's House of two storeys with attics and squared and coursed rubble walls with ashlar dressings was built on an E-shaped plan, comprising central block, two west wings and a porch, circa 1600. During the 17th century the central block was extended east to form a 'double pile' and in the nineteenth century the house was divided into three tenements. <2>
