(See RAF air photographs CPE/UK/2431/4144-5. 22 1 48). <1>

An Iron Age/Romano British field system is visible as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs <2-12>. It consists of pronounced field banks and lynchets, particularly on the valley slope where there has been no modern cultivation, although the area is almost entirely under pasture. They were formerly more extensive and have in parts been overlaid by or integrated into a later pattern of broad medieval ridge-and-furrow (MDO21674 ) and strip lynchets (MDO21675).

This overlying ridge-and-furrow on the downland probably represents a temporary or sporadic extension of cultivation beyond the limits of the permanent arable in the Mediaeval period or, possibly, later. Modern ploughing is completing the work of destruction throughout the whole group. The remains have been further disturbed by numerous small quarries and chalk pits, now disused (MDO21264).

Fragments of a possible Iron Age/Romano-British settlement (MDO21677 ) situated on the valley slope just to the north-west of Long Lands Farm are likely to be contemporary with the field system.
