Full Description
Includes Nos 13 to 17 (Westover Mansions and attached shops). Circa 1906, red brick with stone dressings, mixed Renaissance style, 3 storeys and attic. Skyline of alternating straight gables, supported by consoles, and segment-headed dormers. Most 1st floor windows segment-headed, prominent keystones to 2nd floor. Ground floor shops to Westover Road have verandah-loggia of iron projecting over pavement: Corinthian colonnettes, fascia with egg-and-dart cornice, Arts and Crafts balustrade with downward-curving sweeps of iron between openwork pilasters. Nos 13-17 Gervis Road have same balustrade and fascia, but with pendants, Hudson's grocery shop (No 13) had good original front with arched glazing bars and tiling, removed in 1974. Included for group value importance of verandah in street scene, opposite the Arcade (see Old Christchurch Road).<1>
