Summary

Former Convent of The Cross built in 1889 in Elizabethan style on an E-shaped plan. The front of the building is Purbeck stone rubble, and a striking decorative feature is the porch with sculpted angels adoring the cross. The south wing connects to the adjacent chapel which is built in Early English style. The buildings now house a college.

Full Description

The Ordnance Survey 2nd edition 25in map (1898) (1) shows a convent in extensive ornamental grounds at Parkwood Road, Pokesdown. It may have been associated with the adjacent Roman Catholic church and school. The 3rd edn map (1909) (2) showed a substantial extension to the building to the SE, including a chapel.
