'In 1967 Mr. Robert Maltby found an unfinished mace-head on the surface of one of his fields on Martin's Down, Longbredy. It has been identified by the S.W. Implement Petrology Survey as a hornblende dolerite (Dorset 105, no. 1392). The surface is a highly polished greenish-brown, with a few mica flecks. The ends are roughened. The traditionally mesolithic hour-glass perforation is in this instance incomplete as only one surface has been bored. The dimensions are:- overall length 3.6 inches; elliptical section, at wide end 2.7 inches by 1.5 inches, at narrow end 1.9 inches by 0.9 inches.
The term "mace-head" is used without any implication of function.'
