Full Description

SY536916. The flattish top of a chalk spur near Coombe shows an area of dark earth associated with Samian and Romano-British coarse pottery, as well as much burnt limestone debris. Limestone is not local, and probably come from the the South side of the Bride Valley. Probable settlement site. <1>

‘A Romano-British Occupation Site at Coombe, Litton Cheney
West of the road from the A35 at SY 536916 a Chalk spur with underlying Eggardon Grit and Greensand juts southward from the main ridge. The flattish top of the spur shows an area of dark earth associated with samian and Romano-British coarse pottery as well as much burnt limestone debris. The site, with its adjacent spring, resembles that a Pins Knoll on the same contour, about a kilometre to the south-east. Limestone is not local to either site and was brought for building purposes from the Jurassic south side of the Bride Valley.’

‘5. HIGHER COOMBE. SY 536916. On south-projecting greensand spur at 120 m. Dark area with considerable scatter of limestone (Forest Marble) debris. Abraded coarse ware with a little Samian (1973).’
