Full Description
The manor of Compton was purchased by Thomas Abingdon in 1542, a small manor house being constructed shortly afterwards. An engraving of 1794 appears to indicate a Tudor house with C18th alterations particularly in the west gable where three mullioned windows are planed irregularly above each other. A document of 1665 describes the house as containing a Hall, great parlor, little parlor kitchen, brewhouse and wellhouseas well as stables, barn and outhouse. The plan of the stables and cider house possibly indicates a mid C16th construction. It is suggested that major alterations to the whole group of buildings was undertaken in the mid C18th. A fire destroyed the North range of the stable block in 1827, and around 1844 the house was rebuilt, probably to enlarge it following the marriage of John Gooden, the owner of Compton House. The house was again considerable altered and extended in the late C19th. <1-3>
