Monument record MDO144 - Bowl barrow on Batcombe Down, Batcombe

Summary

A bowl barrow on Batcombe Down 450 metres south west of the Friary of St Francis. The barrow mound, previously recorded by the Ordnance Survey as a shallow flinty mound 10 metres in diameter and 0.3 metres high, is no longer visible. Surrounding the area of the mound is a quarry ditch from which material was excavated during its construction. This has become infilled over the years but survives as a buried fearure 2 metres wide.

Full Description

A grass covered, flinty mound with no visible ditch. The mound has been dug out on top and flattened. It is 8.0m in diameter and 0.4m high. Probably a bowl barrow. <1-2>

Grinsell records this barrow as 8 paces in diameter and 1½ feet high. <3>

The area is regularly ploughed and only an amorphous unsurveyable rise remains at the position indicated. <4>
