Full Description
(SY 58938692) A dark circular soil mark 20.0m in diameter with a light soil mark 5.0m wide surrounding the dark
patch is visible on air photograph CPE/U/1824/3302. On the ground the dark soil mark is accompanied by a very slightly
raised mound, though unsurveyable. The flint content is rather heavier than elsewhere. There is no trace of a surrounding ditch, and the light soil mark is not definable on the ground. The field is at present ploughed, and the site may possibly represent that of a ploughed out barrow. The name of the locality 'Broom Barrow' may not be without significance. <1>
On the 1st edition 1" map <2> a 'mound' (portrayed in the same way as existing barrows which are shown on the map) is shown to the east of the old Abbotsbury to Littlebredy road in the approximate position of the soil-mark described by Authy 1. In addition two further 'mounds' are depicted west of the road at approximately SY 58818690 and SY 58848690. The name Broom Barrow appears to apply to one or all of this group. None of the mounds appears on the 1st edition 1:2500 of 1889 <3>.
SY 58938692. Little Bredy 31. Bowl barrow listed, quoting Authy 1.

Two barrows shown on OS 1" 1811. "Low light traces" reported by Rodney Legg in 1980. <4>
The site of a Bronze Age bowl barrow, 15m across with an external ditch, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs <6-7>. The site was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
