Summary

An asymmetric High Victorian mansion which was originally set within a park of 300 acres which included Pulhamite rockwork. The house was constructed in 1878 by Alfred Waterhouse for Lord Wolverton and is of two-storeys and built of rubble and ham stone ashlar with bonding courses. The tiled roofs has ashlar stacks located mainly along the ridge.The service functions were located in the west end. In 1908 the house was altered and it was bought by James Hainsworth Ismay. During his ownership it is known that James Pulham and Son, comprising probably James Pulham III (1845-1920) and/or James Robert Pulham (1873-1857) were commissioned to work on the gardens with Edward Milner. In 1933 the estate was acquired by Clayesmore School.

Full Description

Country house originally set within a park of 300 acres. It was constructed in 1878 by Alfred Waterhouse for Lord Wolverton. The house is of two-storeys, built of rubble and ham stone ashlar with tiled roofs. The service functions were located in the west end. In 1908 the house was altered and it was bought by James Hainsworth Ismay. During his ownership it is known that James Pulham and Son comprising probably James Pulham III (1845-1920) and/or James Robert Pulham (1873-1957) were commissioned to work in the grounds in conjunction with Edward Milner. In 1933 the estate was acquired by Clayesmore School. The site has been included in the national Pulham Database (ID no. 253) and subsequently pulbished in the gazetteer. <1-5>
