Full Description

According to the older local people in about 1900, the cross was restored about a hundred years before, the old Ham Hill stonework being replaced by Melbury stone. Pope says that this is to some extend confirmed by the several pieces of worked Ham Hill stone build in with the Melbury. <2>

MARKET CROSS (78641407), 200 yds. N.W. of the church, comprises four stone steps, octagonal in plan, and an octagonal pedestal above; the shaft and cross have gone. The steps and pedestal are probably of the 15th century. <3>

The Medieval cross-base is generally as described by RCHM <3>. It is in a good state of preservation, though time-worn. Detail checked on 1:2500 AM. <4>
