Summary

Linear earthworks running alongside and on both banks of a stream. Of unknown date and function, but thought likely to be medieval or later. Thought possibly to be an area of old gravel workings and natural river features visible as a group of earthworks. The dates of the features are uncertain.

Full Description

'Gudgin's Banks', centred at ST 62610763, are a composite of natural river terraces and old grass-covered gravel pits and spoil banks. No traces of any earthworks of archaeological
interest were found. There appears to be no local knowledge of this site, or of its name. Similar unpublished gravel workings extend to the north of Gudgin's Banks along the west bank of the stream. Published 1:2500 AM survey and MSD revised. <4>

'(21) Gudgin's Banks, 350 yards S.W. of (20), consist of a bank rising about 4½ ft. above a ditch on the W. side. The bank extends for about 200 yards, but not continuously, along the W. bank of a stream. Beyond the southern extremity there are remains of another bank continuing its line on the E. bank of the stream. Its purpose is uncertain but it is probably of medieval or later origin.'
