Map

Type and Period (1)

Full Description

An area of grass, furze and small bushes which shows signs of agricultural activity. On the south east half are two or three widely spaced lynchets, averaging 0.3m high, and running in a north-east to south-west direction. Between these, and in the north west half of the area are furrows and ridges, each ridge being approximately 2.0m apart. There are no features by which this small field system is readily dateable, but it may be of no great antiquity. <1>

Area SY 613808. No traces of the north east to south west lynchets mentioned by authority 1 are visible on air photographs, but a system of probable old field plots can be discerned in the same area. <2>

The area was included in the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project. The NE-SW lynchets were identified on the 1946 APs <2> as well as on photographs taken in 1978 <3>. Ditched field boundaries were also visible as cropmarks to the north-west.
