Full Description
Disused probable early 19th century limekiln South of Whitmore Coppice at Langton Herring. The kiln is rectangular in plan and built of roughly coursed stone, partly built into a natural slope. The draw arch, formed by a narrow segmental arch set within a broader arch, is approached through a wide tunnel with a broad barrel-vaulted roof. There is single draw-eye with a pokng hole above. The sides of the kiln rise to form a 2m high wall around the mouth of the circular pot, with an entrance on the south side for charging.
SY 622825. Stone built updraught lime kiln, possibly early 19th century, built into a hillside at Langton Herring. It is about 20ft diameter and is complete with an earth charging ramp. An unusual feature is a tunnel about 10ft high and 14ft broad which leads to thebase of the kiln on the north side, possibly to improve the draught. <3 - 5>
The site of an 'Old Lime Kiln' is marked to the south of Whitmore Coppice on the OS 1st Edition map. It is visible as earthworks on aerial photographs <1> and was digitally plotted during the South Dorset Ridgeway Mapping Project.
