Full Description
The former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel (now Bridport Arts Centre) stands on the east side of a forecourt on the east side of South Street, Bridport. It was built in 1838 to the designs of James Wilson FSA of Bath and built by Charles and Joseph Galpin of Bridport. It is rectangular in plan with a recess at the east end for the organ. It is built of rubble stone with a stucco west front and a hipped slate roof. The pedimented west front has four Doric pilasters and the central bay is set back to contain two fluted Ionic columns-in-antis flanking a central square-headed door. On the ground floor are two segmental-headed windows, with three round-headed windows above. On the freize is "Wesleyan Methodist Chapel" in contemporary lettering, overpainted with "Bridport Arts Centre". In the interior are galleries supported on iron columns around three sides. These were added in 1855. The chapel closed in 1969.
