Full Description

(SY 66599734) Manor House (NR) (Site of) (1)

The earliest reference occurs in King John's time when Richard de Godmanstone possessed the manor. This family held it practically without break until perhaps early in Edward IV's reign, when it seems to have been forfeited to the crown, and then granted to John Mohun. The manor passed to the Trenchard's, and by attainder of John Trenchard for treason, it reverted to the Crown in 2 Richard III. Soon after, Godmanston was granted to the Brownes with whom it remained until 1770.

The manor-house of the Brownes probably stood near the church. Nothing now remains except surface undulations indicative of buildings or gardens. (2)

No trace of the manor house may now be seen. The site referred to, falls in a farm enclosure. Manor Farm at SY 66669730, and Manor House at SY 66689735, are both modern. (3)
